Economics of the Public Sector: Third Edition

At the center of our country's political life are some basic economic questions: How does the government affect the economy? What should the government do? Why are some economic activities undertaken in the public sector and others in the private? Shouldgovernment do more than it is currently doing, or less? Should it change what it is doing, and how it is doing it? To answer these questions, we must begin by understanding what the government does today. How had the government grown over the past fifty years? How do the size and scope of government in the United States compare with government's size and scope in other countries? This new edition of the acclaimed textbook by leading economic Joseph W. Stiglitz is the definitive text for studying public sector economics.

Download Government Size and Economic Growth in Transition Economies - Battulga Serg ...
Description: In recent years there has been substantial empirical work on the relationship between government size and economic growth. However, apart from a few recent studies, this relationship is much less well researched for transition economies. This thesis analyses the relationship between government size and economic growth in 26 transition economies during 1990-2005 by estimating the two-sector growth model of Ram (1986) and panel regressions. The thesis finds a decreasing positive effect of government size on economic growth in these economies. The analysis also confirms that relative factor productivity was higher in the government sector than in the non-government sector during the early years of transition and vice versa over the late years of transition. Additionally, a positive externality effect of government sector on non-government sector may have been stronger during the later years of transition.
Download World Public Sector Report 2003: E-Government at the Crossroads -
Description: Book DescriptionThe World Public Sector Report 2003 provides an analysis of the status of e-government in the world today. It adopts the UN Millennium Declaration as its analytical framework and presents global ranking of Member States as to their e-government readiness. The main message of the Report is that development and the existence of e-government applications do not necessarily reflect the quality of life in a country. However, treating e-government as a tool that facilitates creation of public value by public administration can positively impact human development.

Description: This is the first volume in a new, definitive, six-volume edition of the works of Joseph Stiglitz, one of today's most distinguished and controversial economists. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001 for his work on asymmetric information and is widely acknowledged as one of the pioneers in the field of modern information economics and more generally for his contributions to microeconomics. Volume I includes a number of classic papers which helped to form the foundations for the field of the economics of information. Stiglitz reflects on his work and the field more generally throughout the volume by including substantial original introductions to the Selected Works, the volume as a whole, and each part within the volume. The volume includes a number of foundational papers, specifically looking at market equilibrium with adverse selection, moral hazard, and screening. This volume sets out the basic concepts underlying the economics of information,
Download Public Private Partnerships in Construction - Duncan Cartlidge
Description: Collaborative working and partnering between the public and private sectors has been fairly standard practice, in some form or other, for over 100 years. However, its profile has risen only comparatively recently. In the UK, it is little more than 10 years since the most widely known Public Private Partnership, the Private Finance Initiative, was launched and yet it has already been described by some as 'the new economic paradigm'. Initially a public relations disaster, the PFI has now become the preferred method of procurement for many UK Government agencies, such as the NHS A?38bn capital building programme, whereas other bodies oppose the introduction of the private sector into the provision of traditional public sector services. Although the use of PPPs / PFIs is the most controversial procurement strategy currently employed by the UK government, it currently accounts for approximately 11% of government expenditure and there is no doubt that it is here to stay.
