The emphasis is on the powerful forces of international competition and the limitations of government policy. Economics began with a political debate over tariffs and the politics continue. Domestic industries lobby for protection against foreign competitors and for export subsidies. Government policy makers favor their pet industries in return for lobby money and votes. Meanwhile, other industries lobby for free trade. Governments worldwide tentatively negotiate free trade agreements while international financial markets determine the effectiveness of their fiscal and monetary policies. Wages, capital returns, and national income rise and fall with international commerce. The text covers these issues of international trade and finance. The trade theory is based on partial equilibrium market analysis, constant cost and neoclassical general equilibrium, the factor proportions model,...

Download The Economics of Trade Protection - Neil Vousden
Description: Over the past two decades there has been a gradual but fundamental change in the nature of trade protection. Even as international negotiation has succeeded in reducing tariffs to low levels, national governments have resorted to a range of increasingly intricate policies to protect their domestic industries from foreign competition. Direct quantitative restrictions on international trade have become particularly widespread. Such nontariff barriers often have very different effects from tariffs and require careful analysis in their own right. This book presents a systematic overview of the modern theory of trade protection. The material in the book divides naturally into four sections. The first section covers trade restrictions in competitive markets, the second trade restrictions and imperfect competition, the third the political economy of trade protection, and the fourth the theory of policy reform. The presentation makes extensive use of diagrams, with the more

Download Elements of Agricultural Trade Policies - James Houck
Description: International trade in agricultural products has increased six- fold in the past thirty years; this, accompanied by rapidly changing world markets, has created a demand for an up-to-date book on the economics of agricultural trade policies. With concise,easy-to-follow analysis, Elements of Agricultural Trade Policies introduces the typical protective trade policy schemes and mechanisms used by the major agricultural trading nations, both importers and exporters. In addition, it clearly describes the principles of comparative advantage and economic gains from trade. Houck presents analyses of such traditional strategies as tariffs and quotas, as well as such modern devices as market discrimination and export subsidies. He addresses exchange rates, preferential trading, and effective protection policies, putting special emphasis on partial equilibrium analysis of various trade policy schemes. Most important, by focusing on the economic forces and consequences associated
Download Imperfect Competition in International Trade - Winston W. Chang, Seiichi Ka ...
Description: A theoretical analysis of international trade and industrial policy, developing and using new models of trade with imperfect competition. Modeling of imperfect competition within international trade has been difficult until recent breakthroughs in this area, which have provided a more realistic view of the world economy. The book builds on the advances provided by such tools as game theory and the theory of monopolistic competition. The first section covers broad and basic trade issues which arise under imperfect competition. Section two examines implications for trade policy covering issues such as strategic trade policy in static and dynamic settings. Section three deals with various structural issues, such as optimal choice of trade liberalizing policies, the formation of trade blocks, and open dualistic economy with externalities.
